“ Buckle Up Boys, You’re In For A Bumpy Ride”

So said Bette Davis in the opening few minutes of, I believe, “All About Eve” in which she starred against Joan Crawford – all I can remember is that it was in black and white and Davis descends a staircase at a party looking quite stunning and utters these lines as some man lights her cigarette  (I really must be getting old.) Don’t ask me why I remember it – I just thought it was a great line. It came back to me this week as there have been numerous discussions and questions over the activities of the Police in Gran Canaria and the arrests of various people and their subsequent release and on-going investigations. I do not intend to make any comment about these activities as they are clearly sub judice and not a matter RDO would get directly involved in.

“However” …. And it is a big “However”, the Board of RDO decided early on this year that the time had come for the organization to make a stand against the people who continue to prey unencumbered on timeshare owners, holiday makers and other consumers looking for value for money from future holidays.

It was perceived that for too long, the trade association had looked to the relevant state organisations to enforce the law and to track down the fraudsters preying on our industry. Lack of state resources inevitably meant this had not happened – the time had come to act and to act decisively.

RDO has recognized this in the setting up of the “Timeshare Task Force” in the UK, about which more will be disclosed later this year. I am sure that those the TTF intends to target will merely shrug this off as yet another initiative that will go nowhere. I know of very few, if any, other European trade organisations that finance their own enforcement arm and in this case – go to the relevant state authorities to seek their support and also to offer support in order to rid our industry of these parasites once and for all. We are doing that as of now and are stepping up the ante in this respect.

It was never going to be an easy ride, there will be set backs and diversions, but the core strategy has surely to be right – we have to clean these people out once and for all, and we have that opportunity to do so now. This is not a time for faint hearts – the Board has decided on its course and that needs to be followed through.

I can’t help thinking that the likes of the late Ron Haylock and Hedley Rhodes both of whom loved this industry – would have been 100% behind this initiative and Ron, who could always be relied on to lead the questions at our September AGM, would undoubtedly have led off with this. Who will pick up that gauntlet?

Es lo que dice Bette Davis en los primeros minutos de la película  “¿Qué fue de Baby Jane?”, creo, que protagonizó junto a Joan Crawford – todo lo que recuerdo es que estaba en blanco y negro y Davis desciende por una escalera en una fiesta con un aspecto bastante impresionante y pronuncia esta frase mientras un hombre enciende su cigarrillo (realmente debo estar haciéndome mayor) No me preguntéis por qué lo recuerdo, sólo pensé que era una gran frase. Me acordé de ella esta semana mientras se sucedían las conversaciones y preguntas sobre las actividades de la policía en Gran Canaria y la detención de varias personas, su liberación posterior y las investigaciones en curso. No pretendo hacer ningún comentario sobre estas actividades, ya que el procedimiento judicial está abierto y no una cuestión en la que RDO se vaya a involucrar directamente.

“Pero” y es un gran “pero” la Junta de Gobierno de RDO decidió a principios de este año que había llegado el momento de que la organización se posicionase en contra de las personas que continúan persiguiendo sin trabas a los propietarios de tiempo compartido, turistas y otros consumidores que buscan una buena relación calidad precio para sus futuras de vacaciones. Nos hemos dado cuenta de que durante mucho tiempo la asociación había confiado en los organismos pertinentes del Estado para hacer cumplir la ley y para localizar a los estafadores que se aprovechan de nuestra industria. La falta de recursos significa, inevitablemente, que esto no haya sucedido. Había llegado el momento de actuar y de actuar con decisión.

RDO ha reconocido esto en la constitución de la “Timeshare Task Force” en el Reino Unido, de la que se sabrá más a finales de este año. Estoy seguro de que a los que la TTF tendrá como objetivo simplemente se encogerán de hombros ante esto pensando que es otra iniciativa que no irá a ninguna parte. Conozco muy pocas organizaciones empresariales europeas, si es que hay algunas, que financien su propio departamento para hacer cumplir la ley y en este caso acudir  a las autoridades pertinentes del Estado para buscar su apoyo y también para ofrecer su ayuda con el fin de librar a nuestra industria de estos parásitos de una vez por todas. Nosotros vamos a hacerlo a partir de ahora, y estamos intensificando la apuesta en este sentido.

No va a ser nunca un camino de rosas, habrá retrocesos y desvíos, pero la estrategia central seguro que es la correcta, tenemos que echar a esa gente fuera de una vez por todas, y tenemos la oportunidad de hacerlo ahora. Este no es un tiempo para corazones débiles, la Junta ha decidido el camino y ahora debe seguirse.

No puedo dejar de pensar que los difuntos Ron Haylock y Hedley Rhodes,  quienes amaban esta industria, habrían apoyado esta iniciativa al 100%  y Ron,  en quien siempre se podía confiar para dirigir las preguntas en nuestra Asamblea General de septiembre, sin duda hubiera hecho referencia a este proyecto. ¿Quién recogerá ese guante?
