Why the Pearly Grey Team Trip to South Africa Was so Important

Pearly Grey Ocean Club in Tenerife has been a proud supporter of the Ingane Yami Children’s Village in South Africa since 2010. During these past seven years, the resort team and guests have been closely involved in raising funds for this incredible charitable organisation. Over this time there has also been a strong bond formed between the staff at Pearly Grey and the village. It has long been a wish of the resort developers to be able to take the management team out to South Africa to meet the amazing people working at Ingane Yami and the children that stay there.

The charitable work that Ingane Yami does is incredible and truly inspiring, with a very simple and effective ethos behind what they do. They believe that every child deserves a chance in life, no matter what kind of background they have come from. They believe that the best way to support children orphaned by the devastating HIV/AIDS crisis is to provide a loving, stable home for them to live and thrive in. At the Ingane Yami Village there are individual homes in each of which six children are housed with a carefully selected foster mum. Education of course, is seen as vital to the development and future life chances of these children, so they all have access to an on-site preschool and school. There are other services within the village as well including a community centre, clinic and administration offices.

Since the charity was created back in 2007, it has been going from strength to strength, especially since Pearly Grey began to support them. Every year, the resort organises a charity golf day to raise funds for the village. Last year’s event brought the total amount raised to well over €150,000!  The resort developers decided the time was definitely right to thank the staff at Pearly Grey for all the support they have given over the years to the charity. They decided to personally fund a trip to South Africa for the management team which culminated in a visit to the Ingane Yami Village to meet the children they had been helping over the years.

This was an incredible experience for the team, some of whom had never been to South Africa before. In January of this year the team set off on their South African adventure. This included a four day stay in the stunningly beautiful city of Cape Town before they then headed to Durban. The main reason for the trip was to visit the Ingane Yami Village, but beforehand the Pearly Grey team also managed to fit in some time for some incredible organised excursions, to enjoy the full South African experience. This included Table Mountain, Robben Island, Shark Diving and a safari at the world renowned Phinda Game Reserve.

Visiting the village was a day filled with immense joy, emotion and pride for the Pearly Grey team which was a culmination of seven years of collaboration with the charity. This was a chance for the Pearly Grey team to finally be able to put faces to the names that they had become familiar with over the years and to forge even stronger ties with the village and the wonderful people that work there with such care and dedication.

On the morning of the day that the Pearly Grey team had to head back to Tenerife, the local Kloof Harvest Church who manage the village had kindly organised a very special thank you service in recognition of the partnership and contribution made by everyone at Pearly Grey.

If anyone is interested in sponsoring the next Pearly Grey annual Charity Golf Day which is at Golf Costa Adeje on Saturday 3rd June 2017 then please email golf@pearlygrey.com for more information.
